VIDEO: R’fontein’s stinky situation continues

The Herald uncovers yet another sewage hot-spot.

It seems that the town’s streets are full of it – again.

The Herald has it on good authority that the spill has been there for at least a week.

The man hole cover lay next to the manhole either because of the pressure or because it has been moved by someone.

Sewage is now running in the Riebeeck Lake area behind residences on Raven Road. The stream of sewage is hardly five meters away from some homes’ backyard walls.

Evert du Plessis, ward councillor for the area said he approached the Randfontein Local Municipality to fix the issue.

They said they would fix it. It’s been running like this for a week and a half now. They promised me it would be sorted out this morning (Tuesday, 2 September) but as you can see it’s still running,” du Plessis said.

The sewage is running out of a manhole. When the Herald was on scene, the man hole had looked to have either been removed or pushed up by the pressure of the water. The leak is not a small one either. It has stronger than usual pressure and looks like a white, smelly stream.

The sewage runs a good few metres from the source making a pool behind two houses after which it runs into a storm water drain.

Ward Councillor of the area, Evert du Plessis says the leak has persisted for more than a week.

Du Plessis says he is unclear where the storm water drain line runs to. The drain is not far from the infamous Greenhills stream. The pipeline could possibly run into the stream however, there is no evidence to suggest it is other than the close proximity.

Du Plessis says scores of residents have complained about the smell and would like the issue to be fixed.
