‘Mentally unstable man’ attempts to steal car

'Suspect either on drugs or mentally unstable.'

“A highly paranoid suspect” was allegedly caught trying to break into a car in Brayan Street around noon on Monday local security company Mapogo Security said.

Mapogo Security received a panic signal from a business in the street where Johan Edward Janse van Rensburg was dispatched to the scene.

On arrival he confronted a man who seemed very agitated.

The man denied trying to break into the car, saying he thought it was allegedly his girlfriend’s “other” boyfriend’s car.

According to Janse van Rensburg nothing the man said made sense and after the confrontation, the suspect started getting aggressive.

Three of Mapogo’s Reaction officers tried to contain the man, but he started getting violent, attacking the officers. He then ran away, where the officers eventually caught him.

Police were called in where the suspect told them three different stories. They also noted that he was either on drugs or mentally unstable.

Police then decided to let the suspect go, taking in consideration he was in an emotional state.

The suspect allegedly works at a hospital in Randfontein where personnel from the hospital arrived later, looking for him.

They said he arrived at work in the morning, but their was something different about the suspect. He then left, saying he needed to attend to something. He never returned. The personnel seemed very worried about the suspect, and later received a call stating the suspect was trying to break into a car.

After the police left the scene, the personnel from the hospital were still searching for the suspect but he was no where to be found.

Mapogo Reaction officer Johan Janse van Rensburg was told the suspect could not drive and added “I do not understand what he was trying to do.”
