Greenhills shooting: Woman, 83, robbed

The 83-year-old woman was forced into her bedroom while suspects ransacked her house.

A 83-year-old woman was the victim of the house robbery in Greenhills where suspects opened fire on police.

The incident occurred on Tuesday (25 August) at approximately 8:30pm.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein police, “It is alleged that the victim was in her house when she heard a loud noise in the TV room.”

She went to investigate and was confronted by three unknown suspects who forced her to her bedroom.  The suspects took money and they asked for other valuables. The victim was left in the bedroom while the suspects ransacked the house.  When she thought it was safe, she investigated and found that her cellular telephone and a computer were taken.”

Ernst explains that members of the CPF, EPR security, and Randfontein police were patrolling in the area as they were on the lookout for a suspicious looking vehicle – it was reported that a silver BMW was spotted in the area.

Subsequently, they saw the BMW in Falcon Street, Greenhills and one of the patrolling vehicles boxed the BMW in to prevent them from driving off.

A person in the BMW then jumped out of the vehicle and shot at the patrol vehicle.  A police officer, who was travelling in the patrol vehicle returned fire. The occupants of the BMW then fled on foot. An intensive search in the area resulted in the arrest of the occupants of the BMW and they were detained.  During the thorough search of the abandoned BMW, the stolen items that were taken from the elderly victim were recovered,”Ernst said.

She said the members from the Krugersdorp Cluster Task Team did follow up investigation throughout the night and recovered stolen items from the houses of the suspects, which included an unlicensed firearm.  The investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected shortly.

Acting Randfontein Station Commander, Colonel Marius Smit applauded the good co-operation between the various stake holders who secured the arrest and subsequent recovery of stolen goods.  Partnership in the combating of crime in the area has had numerous successes the past few weeks.
