Garage takes motorists for a ride

This is fraud, furious motorists said.

Motorists were left fuming at a local Sasol petrol station after they still had to pay R13,52 a litre on Wednesday morning 5 August – the day the petrol price was supposed to have dropped by 51 cents a litre.

Furious residents contacted the Herald. Some of them already had filled up their tanks, only to realise that the price was not adjusted and the meter still reads R13,52 a litre.

Motorists who had noticed this left the petrol station in anger.

The owner of the garage claims the problem is due to a faulty computer system.

Vincent de Lange spoke to the Herald just before he left the station as a very unsatisfied customer.

This is fraud, this station has deteriorated over the last few months.”

Another resident who wished to remain anonymous said, “This is not the first time this Sasol garage undermines the law by not adhering to the changing petrol prices.”

A motorist who fills a 35 litre tank at the old price stands to be defrauded of R17,85. Should 100 motorists do the same, the owner of this Sasol petrol station would pocket an extra R1 785.00. Many motorists fill their tanks as soon as the fuel price drops, so this amount could escalate to much more per day.

It’s said all petrol station owners are well aware that it is the law that they adhere to petrol price increases or decreases.

CEF (SOC) Ltd released the following information in an official statement dated 31 July on behalf of the Department of Energy regarding the adjustment to the fuel prices (Wednesday 5 August):

• Product: Petrol 95 and 93 (ULP and LRP): 51 cents per litre, decrease in retail price

• Diesel 0.05 per cent sulphur: 75,82 cents per litre, decrease in wholesale price

• Diesel 0.005 per cent sulphur: 73,82 cents per litre, decrease in wholesale price

• Illuminating paraffin (wholesale): 70 cents per litre, decrease in wholesale price

• Illuminating Paraffin (SMNRP): 93 c/l decrease in the single maximum national retail price (SMNRP)

• Maximum retail price for LPGAS: 89 cents per kg, decrease in the maximum retail price
