Police make presence felt in community

Total of 44 people arrested during Operation Fiyela.

The Randfontein Police together with the rest of the Krugersdorp Cluster made their presence felt during Operation Fiyela on Thursday.

A total of 44 people were arrested and numerous illegal items were confiscated.

At least 100 police officers, traffic officers and officials from the Department of Home Affairs were deployed to carry out the operation from 8.30am to 4pm.

Cluster Commander, Major General Anna Mateisi addressed the officers before deployment and said, “This is part of Operation Fiyela and we will eradicate crime in Randfontein.”

According to Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police, “Three groups were deployed and special attention was given to second hand dealers, scrap yards, spaza shops and unlicensed hawkers.

The successes for this operation included arrests for various crimes such as dealing in illicit cigarettes, contravention of the liquor act, dealing in dagga, possession of drugs, undocumented foreign nationals and dealing in counterfeit goods (dvds).”

“Teamwork in the Krugersdorp Cluster is the largest contributing factor to our success today. Minutes after the members were deployed, the first arrest was made. All the officials on duty are applauded for your efforts,” said Major General Mateisi.
