Women in blue surprise the elderly

Police hand each resident a handmade teddy bear as a token of their appreciation.

The Randfontein Police Women’s Network showed their appreciation to the elderly at Sascha Old Age Home this past Mandela Month.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police the reason for the visit was to show the elderly they care about them. Each of the residents were given a handmade teddy bear as a token of the police’s appreciation.

At their arrival the police women received a warm winter welcome from the residents and gladly were included in a prayer meeting. Residents of the home take turns to do the scripture reading and prayer every morning.

Your generation has set such a good example to us. We hope we will be able to fill the large footprints you have left. It is also our prayers that we will be blessed to reach your age,” said Appel.

The Sascha Old Age Home specialises in frail care and the matron, Elbie Peyper indicated they currently have 28 residents. The ambiance of the facility is not that of a care centre, it rather feels like visiting grandma and grandpa at home.

According to the owner, Andrè Benadie, he always has had the passion for the elderly and identified the need for a care facility in Randfontein. Their doors opened in October 2005.

The facility’s first residents were Andrè’s mother-in-law and an elderly couple. It is evident this is a labour of love and the staff’s patience and understanding need to be commended.

The Randfontein Police Women’s Network extend their gratitude towards the Randfontein women who dedicated their time making the teddy bears.
