Disabled and elderly spoilt for Mandela Day

Free blankets and fancy lunch for W’aria elderly and disabled.

The elderly and disabled pupils from the greater Westonaria were treated to lunch and a blanket donation by the Gauteng Provincial Government, the District Municipality, as well as the Westonaria Local Municipality this Mandela Day.

During the event, the West Rand emergency services, fire department, traffic police and police had the opportunity to reach out to the community and disprove any misconceptions they had about these services.

According to Lucky Matombe, Tarlton Police’s spokesperson,

We like platforms like this to reach out to the community. This way we can show people that the police don’t only chase criminals. We also have many outreach programmes and projects within the community.”

Pamphlets were available, explaining to the elderly and disabled whom to call in specific emergencies as well as informative posters showing what to do in an emergency. One of the most notable was the dos and don’ts in the event of a house/shack fire.

The Westonaria executive mayor Nonkoliso Tundzi handed over blankets to all the beneficiaries of the day’s proceedings after making her Mandela Day speech.

Winnie Leburu and Maggie Malekane from Simunye were just two of the many recipients of warm winter blankets.
