No Olympics for SA men and women’s hockey

Both the South African men and women hockey teams fall short of qualifying for Rio.

For the first time in 24 years, South Africa will not be represented in either the men’s or women’s hockey Olympic tournaments.

Both the South African men’s and women’s hockey teams fell short of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The South African men’s team were unable to even reach the World League semifinals after coming in fourth at the second round in Cape Town in March.

The women’s team, on the other hand, made it through to the semi finals where they had a face-off with Spain. The SA ladies had to finish in the top six to stand a chance to qualify. The match against Spain ended in a 2-0 win for Spain.

The SA women’s team were then relegated to the 7th and 8th position play-off. In order to get a close 7th position, the women absolutely thrashed Ireland with a 4-0 win.
