UPDATE: Police nail cigarette robbers

Major breakthrough for police after following up on robbery incident.

Randfontein Police recovered some of the merchandise from the cigarette truck robbery early on Tuesday.

A vehicle stolen months ago was recovered after following up on the incident as well.

Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police explained to the Herald, “A cigarette delivery vehicle was targeted by five armed robbers at a supermarket in Elandsvlei earlier this morning.

The five suspects were driving a silver Audi and took the driver and crew of the vehicle at gunpoint. Witnesses reported the crime immediately to police. Approximately 10 minutes later, the hijacked vehicle was recovered (without the cargo) in Greenhills approximately 2kms from the original scene.”

“Information was received that a LDV was also accompanying the silver Audi. Members from the Krugersdorp Cluster Task Team followed up information and in less than two hours had successes — They arrested three suspects, recovered most of the cargo, and also recovered a stolen vehicle which was stolen in Kagiso during April of 2015. Two suspects and the silver Audi are still at large. The quick response of the SAPS members are applauded,” Ernst continued.
