Are your advertisements legal?

R'fontein Local Municipality informs residents about advertising regulations.

The Herald previously published an article regarding illegal advertising in town and the Randfontein Local Municipality (RLM) has since released information on how to legally conduct an advertising campaign.

“Any form of advertising requires the written approval of the Randfontein Local Municipality,” Lucky Chiya, spokesperson for the Randfontein Local Municipality said in a statement.

Chiya continued, “All local authorities have advertising laws. These laws are in place to ensure that signs or advertisements do not constitute a danger or nuisance to the community. The signage displayed within it’s designated environment must be aesthetically pleasing, appropriate and placed at appropriate sites.

“There are structural requirements, design requirements, and areas of special restriction. This includes all types of boards including offensive stick on adverts that are applied to private and municipal property, notices on trees, painted on walls and gates, electrical poles, attached to trailers stationary or moving.”

The municipality is there to balance competing interests in a fair, equitable and responsible manner.

Chiya warned, “Any form of advertising that is displayed in the Randfontein area has to pay the relevant fees as set out by the by-laws and municipality, whether it is an approved board or not. Failure to obtain permission does not derogate from the fact that the owner is still using their and the municipality’s property to advertise to the general public.”

How to do it the legal way:

• Submit applications to Building Control Unit, Directorate Development Planning on 1st floor library building (corner of Stubbs and Sutherland Road);

• Office hours between 7.30am to 4pm from Monday to Friday;

• Contact numbers: 011 411 0353 or 011 411 0453.

Chiya urges the community of Randfontein to contact the Building Control Unit for further information before erecting an advertisement and unexpectedly receiving an account for any form of advertising being it legal or illegal.
