Former Rierand principal killed in car crash

Numerous casualties in Brandvlei horror crash.

Former principal of Hoërskool Riebeeckrand, Gunther Buhner as well as former teacher Jackie Alberts and her daughter, 5, tragically passed away in a motor vehicle collision (MVC) along with three others on Sunday night.

According to Chris Botha, spokesperson for Netcare911, “Six people in total died and three people sustained life-threatening injuries while one was in a serious condition. Some of the occupants were ejected from the vehicle and was found several meters from the vehicles.”

Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein police confirmed the accident occurred on the N14 between Ventersdorp and Krugersdorp near the Brandvlei crossing.

“It is alleged that on Sunday 14 June at approximately 6pm, a BMW 1 series and a Cross Polo collided head on. The BMW had five occupants of which three died instantly and two sustained injuries. Due to the collision, the BMW went up in flames and the vehicle was totally destroyed in the fire.

“The Cross Polo was also carrying five occupants. The adult female driver and the adult male passenger, as well as a 5-year-old girl died instantly in the collision. Two other passengers, a boy of approximately 9 and a young woman was critically injured and transported to hospital,” Ernst added.

Tessa Viljoen, medic at Quick Response Services (QRS) said, “We got to the scene and the BMW was totally burned out. There were people still entrapped. We transported a sixteen-year-old girl from the Polo. She has femur fracture, arm fracture and head trauma. “
