VIDEO: How to change a tyre for dummies

Local mechanic gives safety tips and steps on how to change a tyre.

What does one do after hitting one of the many potholes in Randfontein? Or perhaps getting a flat in a foreign area?

Qualified mechanic, Barney Nel took the time to show the Herald and by extension the rest of Randfontein how to correctly change a tyre. However, he also gives safety tips in the event of getting a flat in an unsafe environment.

With regards to safety he said, “I feel that if a woman were to get stuck on the side of the road, they should drive to the nearest and safest place to get help or change the tyre. There was a case where a woman was in a similar situation in Krugersdorp and she was raped and murdered. Tyres and rims are replaceable — lives are not.” This is true for both men and women who get stuck in a dangerous or unknown area.

His wife Gerda Nel added, “If you drive with a flat, drive very slowly with your hazards on. Preferable in the emergency lane of the road until you get to safety.”
