Resident connects electricity illegally

Councillor catches resident stealing electricity for the second time.

DA Ward Councillor, Craig Harrison once again caught a resident of Helikon Park stealing electricity from a street light.

“This is the second time that I’ve caught him connecting illegally. We caught him in March for the first time when the municipality was restoring the old street lights. The latest time we caught him was on the 6th of May,” Harrison said.

The second time around Harrison found that he was illegally connecting was during his routine drives to make sure that everything was running smoothly in his ward. “I took the usual drive just to see where the problem areas are to report them when I found the illegal connection.”

“You know, it’s not just a matter of him connecting illegally, because streetlights are connected to each other from area to area, if he uses too much current then it trips the street lights in another area. This affects other residents as well.”

Harrison did a bit of investigating and found that the resident who was connecting illegally is in arrears at the municipality with his electricity account. He found that he was in so much debt that he was disconnected by the municipality.

“That’s probably why he’s connecting illegally,” Harrison said.

“I spoke to the mayor about it and the municipal manager was notified about the situation. They said that something will definitely be done about it. The consequences for this still need to be discussed.”
