E-toll: Drivers licence renewal outrage!

Drivers license renewals soon to become a nightmare...

The much awaited outcome of the new funding model for e-tolls was announced by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday.

The following was decided after a lengthy consultation with the public and other stakeholders.

Car licenses will not be renewed if motorists’ e-toll bills are not up to date. Motorists will receive a 60 percent discount on their outstanding e-toll bills.

The fee will be reduced from 60c per km to 30c per km and be capped at R225. Motorists will also receive 30 free passes per annum. The Deputy President also announced that the project will be implemented in phases.

The National Chairperson for Justice Project South Africa, Howard Dembovsky, stated to the media “There are legal issues not incoherent with this amendment. He pointed out that withholding the issuing of licence disks, it would be forcing a person that paid their renewal fees, and then be denied a disc would then not be able to display a current licence as prescribed by our own laws.”

This ongoing e-toll debate is leading to a lot of public outrage, once again adding to more frustration for the public.
