SA celebrates World Health Day

Food safety has always taken the ‘back-seat'.

South Africa celebrated annual World Health Day on Tuesday 7 April hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) with the theme of food safety.

“Food safety has always taken the ‘back-seat’ while treating foodborne illnesses like diarrhea is focused on. This is without considering the root of the problem to be as important,” said Dr. Saurabh Arora the founder of Food Safety helpline and Food Safety Mobile App.

This worldwide celebration not only focused on home and private canteen food safety, but also on larger establishments such as hotels and restaurants.

The food safety initiative highlighted the following key focus points:
• Personal hygiene and a hygienic area where food is prepared
• The separation of raw and cooked food to prevent contamination
• Cooking food thoroughly to kill all germs
• Keeping food at a safe temperature (cold-5 degrees Celsius, warm-60 degrees Celsius)
• Using clean and safe water to prepare food
