Approximately R200 000 stolen from municipality’s safe

'They took the money and the CCTV evidence' — municipality.

Police have confirmed that the Randfontein Local Municipality was broken into over the weekend.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein Police, “We are investigating a case of business robbery. The incident happened on Friday 27 February at approximately 9.15pm.”

Ernst could not confirm the amount but could confirm that the safe was broken into.

Phillip Montshiwa, Head of Communications states that, “Approximately R200 008 was taken from the safe.”

He continues to say that the municipality recently changed security companies — their contracts expired on the last day of last month (February) — and that the robbers came into the municipality as the new security company wanting to “take over,” he says.

“The men were armed. They took the money and the CCTV evidence. They tried to erase every bit of evidence that they could.”

When asked whether the incident was an inside job Montshiwa said, “on behalf of the municipality, we are still investigating the matter. There is definitely a suspicion that it was an inside job. Circumstantial evidence points towards it.”
