District Municipality gears up for township revitalisation

The initiative encourages communities to produce goods and services.

The West Rand District Municipality’s (WRDM) Local Economic Development Unit handed over certificates and equipment to district cooperatives from all parts of the region.

This followed registered cooperatives completing economic development training provided by the municipality. The event was in line with the 10 pillar programmes of the Gauteng Provincial Government, which promotes township revitalisation.

“This revitalisation encourages communities to produce goods and services instead of exclusively being consumers,” Dennis Refentse Mangope, spokesperson for the West Rand Executive Mayor said.

Cooperatives were chosen from the constituent local municipalities of the West Rand – Randfontein, Westonaria, Mogale City and Merafong.

The event was opened by the newly appointed MMC for Economic Development, councillor Dennis Thabe and was a joint effort by the WRDM and the Gauteng Economic Propeller known as GEP.

The keynote address also was done by Thabe who encouraged beneficiaries to work towards ensuring the sustainability of their cooperatives. He further encouraged them to utilise the equipment for the purpose they were given for – the production of goods and services.
