Comrades runners urged to keep safety in mind while training

'Precautions road-runners can follow to enhance their safety while training for the big race day'.

The countdown to the 2015 Comrades Marathon has begun.

For athletes around the country 31 May will be the culmination of months of preparation and the remaining days may mean being able to squeeze in additional training – possibly in the early morning or evening.
Given the time of year, and that the sun rises later and sets earlier, a private security company is urging runners to remember that while training is important, their safety is too.
“Exercising caution starts even before you leave your home,” Clive Humphrey, Managing Director of ADT Security Central Region said.
“If you are heading out to the gym or for a run, let someone know when you will be back. This way, if you are not home as scheduled, they can raise the alarm immediately and no time will be wasted in the event of an emergency.”
The safety of your family and home while you are out – even for just an hour or two – is also of utmost importance. Humphrey advised that one should always double-check that the alarm is activated and that the doors and gate are properly locked before leaving.
He added that there are a number of other simple precautions road-runners in particular can follow to enhance their safety while training for the big race day.
• Where possible, avoid running or cycling when it is dark outside.
• Never go jogging or cycling alone; invite family or friends to go with you.
• Before you leave home ensure that your cell phone battery is charged.
• Take along enough money to be able to catch a bus or taxi, or make a phone call if necessary.
• Wear bright reflective clothing so that motorists are able to see you easily; reflective strips on your shoes are not sufficient.
• Never go out running or cycling while listening to music through earphones. This might prevent you from hearing an oncoming vehicle, a potential mugger or a vicious dog.
• Vary your route as often as you can and steer clear of very quiet or unsavoury areas.
