Police warn against bogus workers

'Beware of these scams and alert your domestic worker and children about this' - Randfontein police.

Police have issued a stern warning after Elizabeth du Preez – an elderly woman was casually robbed by people pretending to be municipal workers.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein police, “Unsuspecting residents are often approached by robbers or thieves who pretend to be plumbers, telephone repairmen, electricians and municipal inspectors in order to gain access to your house.

“They even put pressure on unsuspecting residents to open the gate or door. Be aware of these scams and alert your domestic worker and children about this.”

Randfontein police issues the following safety tips as a means of prevention:

• Never leave workmen unattended in your home.

• Conduct thorough background checks before employing anyone, (permanent or casual workers.)

• Be careful what is discussed in front of staff.

• Never open the door automatically whenever the bell rings or someone knocks.

• If you have a panic button system, keep the device on hand at all times and make use of it when you feel threatened.

• Keep cash in banks of safes.

Constable Maseole is the investigating officer of the afore mentioned case. Any information that might assist him in the investigation can be communicated with him on 011 278 8100.
