Chaotic protest on R28

'EFF march not approved' — police.

Police warns residents to avoid taking the R28 and nearby roads due to a protest in Mohlakeng led by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

According to Captain Appel Ernst, spokesperson for the Randfontein police, “There are currently around 1 500 people walking from Mohlakeng to Randfontein. They are using the R28 and they are also using the Finsbury entrance.”

She continued “The march is technically not an approved march because they were supposed to start at 9am but they actually started around 3am this morning. It is a service delivery protest.”

A reporter from the herald on the scene says, “The situation is volatile. The EFF and participants are currently in Randfontein. The police have cordoned off certain areas for safety of the public. The people marching have vandalised the municipality and as they walk, they are throwing the garbage that they have collected on the way to Randfontein.”

According to Bellah Motlashuping, a resident of Mohlakeng, “They stopped taxis from taking children to school and other residents from going to work. Most of the people are at home now. My son was stopped from going to school by the people marching.”
