Overloaded truck wreakes havoc

'It was a disaster waiting to happen' — witness.

There was somewhat chaos on Main Road on Thursday morning after a scrap metal truck had overturned.

According to James Wilson, a witness who managed to stop just in time to avoid the truck dumping its load of scrap metal on top of his vehicle, “The truck failed to stop at the T-junction.

“The driver of the truck came out of Dodge Street, turning left into Main. He did not stop and I could see that the overloaded truck was going to topple over from the momentum. I immediately stopped but the Toyota in front of me was not so lucky and the load came crashing down on his car,” Wilson explained.

Juan Moiloa, the driver of the maroon Toyota Cresida involved in the incident also witnessed the driver of the truck skipping the stop street.

“I saw the truck not stopping but had no time to react. My vehicle is very badly damaged and I am not sure how I am going to get to work and back,” Moiloa said.

The West Rand Fire Department and the Randfontein Traffic Department closed off the road while employees from Rietchard Scrap Metals started clearing the scrap metal from the road and what was left in the overturned truck’s trailer.

It took a massive clean-up operation to clear all the scrap and up to six loads were driven away by similar size trucks.

“The truck was heavily overloaded. You could see that it was a disaster waiting to happen and I am just happy that no one was seriously injured,” Wilson concluded.

The driver and his passenger of the truck sustained minor injuries in the incident and was taken to Leratong Hospital by Netcare 911.

According to Moiloa, the owner of scrap metal company did agree to pay for the damages on his vehicle. He only sustained minor cuts and scrapes and a broken thumb.
