You fail matric – what happens now?

Failing matric is not the end of the line; there are various ways to get around it.

After an exam period of nail-biting, hyperventilating and insomnia for matriculants, the results are finally here.

For most, 6 January was filled with good news and joy. Others have not had the same experience and are faced with even tougher decisions regarding the future of their careers.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not the end of the line. There still are various ways to go about studying and finding a job. You failed matric, now what?

Get a re-mark:

Applications for re-marking close towards the end of January. Matriculants can apply for a re-mark for R70. They can also apply for a re-check for R12 and R150 to view their exam script.

Supplementary exams:

Matriculants who failed less than three exams are eligible for a supplementary exam. How to go about it is to register at an education district office with an ID, exam results and exam number.

Applications must be in before the end of January.

Supplementary exams are free of charge.

Re-do matric:

Matriculants must be under the age of 21.

They can register at a school to re-do matric;

Should a school not accept them, Abotts College specifically deals with these cases.

Further Education and Training (FET) colleges:

Matriculants who have failed or did not gain entry to universities have the option of pursuing a more vocational (technical) line of study.

Bridging courses:

If particular matriculants passed but did not do well enough for university entry, they can opt for a university bridging course.

These courses involve more than just getting matriculants into university but also prepares them for life at university.

Studying without matric exemption:

It is possible to study without having matric exemption. While you did not get into one particular course, it is possible to go into another direction as all entrance levels are not the same.

Studying without matric:

Studying without matric is possible with College SA that brings matriculants who did not pass on par with their peers.

The minimum requirement is Grade 10;

The qualification can go up to NQF level 5.
