Hokkie bokkies wanted

Randfontein Hockey Club looking to expand in 2015.

The vibrant Randfontein Hockey Club has big plans for the year ahead and are looking to start a women’s team.

The club is currently looking for hockey women that are made of steel as well as an iron-fisted coach for 2015.

“It’s important to have a women’s team in order to grow the sport in Randfontein,” Pieter Liebenberg, captain of the men’s side said.

The men’s team is more than willing to assist the women’s team on grassroot level in order to get the ball rolling. The last time that the team had a women’s team was approximately 15 years ago.

This, of course does not exclude male players in Randfontein who are eager to step onto the field on cold winter days to give the opposition a few lessons how how the sport is actually played.

“We also don’t want people to think that this is an exclusively adult team, we invite players at school level to join the club,” said Liebenberg.

He urges schools in Randfontein to send their players to the club; “there is a difference in a player that plays club and one who doesn’t. We are giving pupils the chance to play more competitive hockey in order to gain confidence and a higher skill level on the field. Girls start to evolve on the field the moment they begin to play women’s hockey,” he said.

The club has had a few hurdles in terms of a permanent coach, sponsors and venues with lighting but won their league last year against all odds which proves the sheer dedication and passion to the sport.
