Sewage causes stink at cemetery

Residents warned to stay clear as the human stools can cause serious health issues.

The Randfontein Cemetery has come under the spotlight yet again.

This time sewage was seen flowing from a blocked drain in the main part of the cemetery.

“This is what happens when you over load the system. The infrastructure can’t cope with all the new developments being approved and constructed around Randfontein,” Peter Dick, DA Councilor said.

Dick was referring to amongst others the Greenhills Garden Estate, which was built next to the cemetery in Pine Road.

“It’s time that the municipality slow down and start working on getting the basics right again. The sewage system needs to be upgraded and working properly before any new housing schemes are even considered. Blaming the past actions of others, does not give you permission to just let everything go,” Dick added.

The sewage problem in the cemetery isn’t a new problem and have been overflowing every time the system gets overused or heavy rains fall. The mess can even be seen from space on www.googlemaps.com

Johan Griesel from Roodepoort was spotted laying flowers on an old school friend’s grave on Monday.

“I moved out of Randfontein 12 years ago but return once a year on the anniversary of my friend’s death to pay my respect. Every year and every time I visit the cemetery, it looks worse.

“Its amazing to see the deterioration happen so quickly. Where are the workers? I have tried a couple of times to speak to an employee to ask them to cut the grass around the grave but I never see anyone working,” Griesel said.

Other issues that have also come up in the past concerning the cemetery have not been addressed by the municipality despite numerous articles published in the herald.

Fallen trees, broken walls and vandalized tomb stones are just some of the issues reported on previously. The municipality was approached for comment on the matter but no reply has been given to date.

So while the cemetery might be greener than ever due to the unorthodox fertilizing techniques of the municipality, residents should be warned to stay clear of the human excrement (stools) that can cause serious health issues.
