Netherlands, Namibia on top at 94.7 Cycle Challenge

A woman from Netherlands and man from Namibia were crowned winners of this year's race.

Pandemonium erupted on Sunday following the start of the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge.

Conversely, social media exploded with peeved motorists that had to navigate around road closures for the monumental event.

Nevertheless, able-bodied, disabled, young, old, single bikes, and tandem bikes took to the streets of Fourways. Some for the thrill of the ride, some for the sake of competing and lastly but certainly not least some ride for a cause.

Dancing was seen by the spectators, mascots and some agile cyclists. These agile cyclists also road hands free to give the old back a stretch.

Towards the end, sweat poured from every cyclist, muscles burned and tears were hidden to show that the race was tamed by the humble human body and its trustee side-kick – the bike.

Winners of the 94.7 Cycle Challenge in the women’s and men’s categories are Mariaane Vos of the Netherlands and Till Drobisch from Namibia respectively.

Vos and Drobisch are also the first winners of the new route designed by the Momentum 94.7 Challenge team. Vos rides for Raboank in Europe and is the multiple world and Olympic champion. Drobisch rides for Cycling Centre Africa which is the feeder team for the MTN Qhubeka. Vos finished in a time of two hours, 39 minutes and 57 seconds and Drobisch in a time of two hours, 21 minutes and 54 seconds.
