Gerrit Maritz pupil on top in Going Green competition

Grade 7 pupil is the winner at this year’s National LandCare Conference.

Janéll Rossouw, a Grade 7 pupil from Gerrit Maritz Primary stood head and shoulders above the rest at the sixth Biennial LandCare Conference.

Participating in various district competitions over time and taking top honours in all of them recently paid off for the youngster after being declared winner of this national competition. It was hosted by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in late September in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to Sonia Lombard from the school, “The conference was to provide a platform to showcase strategies to address land degradation challenges facing South Africa.

“Janéll was fortunate enough to experience this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity where she had to submit a poster presentation on ‘Green economy creating jobs’.”

The delegates participated in the different categories of debate, speech, drama and poster presentation.

“I felt like a real celebrity out there,” says Janéll.

Her prizes include a camera, tablet, trophy and certificate.

“The staff and management of the school truly are proud of her and congratulate her once again on this prestigious achievement,” Lombard says.
