Keep abreast of breast cancer: 10 facts everyone should know
We are our own, best advocates for our health. Be proactive, know the facts and make it a priority to educate yourself on the risks of breast cancer.
- A lump in the breast is not always cancer. It could be a cyst, an abnormal noncancerous growth, or a blood clot that causes lumpiness. Still, any lump must be evaluated.
- Exercise can reduce your risk of breast cancer. Studies show that 75 minutes to 2 hours per week of brisk walking reduces your risk by 18%
- Your age, genetic factors, personal health history, and diet all contribute to breast cancer risk.
- Invasive ductal carcinoma is the most common form of breast cancer, accounting for 80% of invasive cases. This cancer starts in the milk ducts of the breast.
- Women with a strong family history of breast cancer are at a higher risk of the disease
- Breast cancer is most common in women over the age of 50, but can occur in younger years
- White South African women have the highest risk (1 in 12 diagnosed positive) to get breast cancer, compared to coloured women (1 in 18) and black women (1 in 49)
