Randfontein’s own Bachelor of the Year finalist

Former RHS pupil determined to win prestigious competition.

As finalist in the 2014 South African Bachelor of the Year competition local resident Rodney Nimmo is determined to win.

Nimmo is among 10 others to battle it out for the coveted title in November. The herald interviewed the talented and driven lad.

Born in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, Nimmo explains that he will focus all his energy and passion for the performing arts to create a new avenue of exposure to help Cansa with their ongoing fundraising and awareness endeavours.

He further strives to make a difference in the lives of the youth.

“I moved to Johannesburg when I was only in Grade 5 and after completing primary school in Lenasia, I enrolled at Randfontein High School (RHS) where I was mentored and sculpted to the man I am today,” says Nimmo.

He further explains that he always had a great passion for dance and performing.

“It was not until I started my studies in Musical Theatre at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) that my passion for the performing arts came to light,” says Nimmo.

Soon after finishing his studies, Nimmo started working in the dance studies department of RHS.

“As a choreographer and dance instructor I am very proud of my dance pupils at the school who went on to compete at Sun City, Cape Town and Randburg National Hip Hop competitions. We placed first in various categories making us national champions,” says Nimmo.

With a great passion for the performing arts as well as charity, Nimmo entered the 2014 SA Bachelor of the Year competition and before long, he was one of the finalists of this prestigious competition.

According to Nimmo, he believes that arts are a powerful medium for engaging with the public and can awaken a force of awareness and funding towards Cansa – a charity he supports with great passion.

“As an arts educator, I am very sensitive to the hearts of young pupils and quickly build an affinity for them. Therefore I am determined to use my expertise in the arts to raise funds and help Cansa in raising awareness about children living with cancer,” says Nimmo.

“To help raise funds and awareness for this cause, I will be hosting a benefit performance in aid of Cansa on 24 and 25 October at RHS where the community can come and indulge in breathtaking hip hop and contemporary dance exhibitions,” says Nimmo.
