Warning: Indigent subsidy has limits

Municipality fears indigent residents might abuse the subsidy.

Indigent residents are warned not to abuse their benefit of receiving free water and electricity from the Randfontein Local Municipality.

The municipality is putting its foot down and says those who exceed their amount of free water and electricity will have to pay for whatever they further consume.

Municipal head of communication Phillip Montshiwa says the municipality cannot be lenient in this regard.

“Households that earn an income of less than R2 800 per month are permitted free water and electricity on a monthly basis to assist them as they cannot afford municipal services.

“However, we do ask that they use such services sparingly and stick within the brackets of the amounts allowed,” says Montshiwa. He adds that those who exceed these will be charged the difference.

  1. You must be delirious. Have you ever heard of uneducated people being told “its for free” and promised the world for free by politicians using it sparingly! You are not in your right mind even asking such a stupid thing. “Its for free” means simply “waste as much as you can” I have seen people leaving hotplates on 24/7 and then demanding new hotplates when they burn. Simply because electricity is “free”! It comes from the pole next to the house. !
