Dangers of substance abuse discussed

Westonaria Youth Coffee Club celebrates Heritage Day by learning more about substance abuse.

There are only three outcomes of drug addiction – jail, rehabilitation or death.

This according to the Westonaria Youth Coffee Club project manager Carina van Rensburg who celebrated Heritage Day by hosting an informative gathering recently where the dangers of substance abuse were the main topic of discussion.

They also invited a representative from Narcotics Anonymous, Elmari Fourie to came and talk to the youth members of Westonaria about the dangers.

According to Fourie, Narcotics Anonymous strives to help those who fell victim to substance abuse, but also raises awareness regarding this problem with the hope that the youth will not have to face this problem.

“It was also stressed that there are only three outcomes of drug addiction, jail, rehabilitation or death,” says Van Rensburg.

To further celebrate Heritage Day, two pupils from Seatile Primary School in Bekkersdal, recited their poems during this event.

“Gloria Cindi wrote in her poem that heritage is a natural thing, it is touched and seen physically, felt spiritually and moulds us culturally, while Jeanette Matabane’s poem brought the message of a child born in a township and his/ her perseverance to succeed and the longing to be their own future,” says Van Rensburg.

Van Rensburg adds that they also collected maize meal during the event and a total of 144,5 kg of maize meal was donated to the local welfare organisation called ‘Ons Spens’.
