Nurse under fire for animal cruelty

SPCA removes more than 10 pets from nurses' home and police slaps her with warning.

The local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) confiscated more than 10 pets at a woman’s home in Randgate because of alleged animal cruelty.

According to Jeanette Muller of the Randfontein SPCA, “The woman, a nurse, came under fire when we received a tip-off that she deprives her animals of the proper care.

“We received a complaint of possible animal cruelty against the woman and we went to her home in Randgate to investigate. On Friday 29 August we went with police and representatives from indigenous wildlife and nature conservation, as well as from the Health Department.

“We found that her house was beyond filthy and that her animals – three mice, one hamster, one tortoise, five quells and three cats – had not been fed or had any water, and were living in terrible conditions.

“If animals are mistreated we have to intervene,” says an upset Muller who adds that some of the animals were squashed into one cage and did not have a drop of water.

“What upsets me the most is that the woman is a nurse and should be hygienic not only at work but in her home as well. It is disturbing to see how she treats these animals and how little she cares for them. They literally are living in a pigsty and it is obvious that the house has not been cleaned for months.

“We have responded to a complaint about possible animal cruelty at her property before,” says Muller. She adds that during that time, they found five dogs, four cats, four rates and 12 chicken on her property that also were not being cared for.

The woman was given a warning by the police to clean up her premises.

  1. Sounds typical of animal hoarding on behalf of the pet-owner – a psycological malady. Other than confiscating the pets, which is the correct thing to do, has the SPCA identified a need assist the nurse in seeking psychological aid?

  2. Give her a proper fine, I am so sick of people that don’t care for animals!!! They can’t speak up for themselves!! I am so glad that there is many people caring for animals, they should give her a fire bucket not a ice bucket!! So she can feel how animals feel that can’t speak for themselves!!!
