Clinic makes patient wait for hours

West Rand Health Services Department to look into the matter following complaint.

The West Rand Health Services Department will investigate allegations of poor service at a clinic in Westonaria.

The clinic has come under the spotlight after resident Chris Steyn complained of poor service delivery during his two visits to the clinic.

On the one day he allegedly was made to wait more than two hours to get any form of attention from the nurses and after the nurses had their lunch they did not want to assist anyone anymore. All he saw them doing was opening a patient file and leaving what he refers to as “a rather disturbing note” inside.

Steyn eventually left the clinic without receiving any form of help.

“I went to the clinic obviously expecting to get help. I got there at around 1pm and I was told to return after an hour because everyone was on lunch.

“I understood this and upon my return, I saw nurses lazing around and playing with their phones while people were waiting to get helped,” says Steyn who adds that patients who also had been queuing for hours were leaving one after the other because no one was assisting them.

He says he waited around for some time and although one nurse registered a file for him, she did nothing else to assist him.

According to him, his patience started wearing thin and he also left the clinic.

“I returned to the clinic on Wednesday (13 August) because I really felt ill and needed medical attention. I was given my file and when I opened it, I saw a note inside that read that I had complained about their services and that I was rude to the nurses,” says Steyn.

“I approached the manager about this and I was told that they would not help me because I had said that I would report their conduct to the media,” says Steyn.

According to Steyn, that’s when he left their premises and approached the herald.

West Rand District Health Services spokesperson Sandile Gwayi says an investigation into these allegations will be launched and a way forward will be communicated to the media.

“We don’t condone any action that constitutes ignoring our patients or disrespecting them in any way. We will investigate this matter and if any of the nurses or officials are found to be guilty of wrongdoing as alleged, we will take action against that person or those people,” says Gwayi.

Ja nee kyk die is erg maar hulle moet die randgate kliniek beleef en ek verstaan almal moet eet maar hkm almal op een slag maak beurte daar is beslis meer as 1 sister en dan as jy vir hulle se jy is honger jy gaan net gou eet dan se hulle daar is mense wat 7dae sonder kos is so ons kan ook solank daar sonder gaan hoop hulle kyk na randgate se mense ook

  2. Maybe the service will change, I wish they start with Westonaria Clinic, it is really out of hand. The staff there they don’t care about patient, you go there in the mornimg you will leave late because they go for tea n lunch while you seating waiting

  3. The Clinics in Randfontein are not any better it seems that they the staff decide when to work and not. at Randgate Clininc you get totally shouted at if you come after 2 , “some of us work you know”and then they deliberately keep you waiting.

  4. The same actions are taking place at Randgate clinic. If not on tea then on lunch. Cell phones seems a very nice way to spend their time. Greeting patients is a no no. The sister doing the vitals is plain rude, makes you feel like a dog. Urine cups very unhigenic. If you stand at reception desk you are ignored most of the time. Seems like nobody cares at all.

  5. It is like that at Krugersdorp Clinic’s as well. You wait all day for a nurse to see you, and when someone finally assist you, the nurse’s don’t even do a proper check-up. I took my child to the clinic in Krugersdorp-west, because she had pain, after she fell. The nurse just looked at my child, and gave her Paracitamol, and a rub. They did not even do a proper check-up. My sister-in law also took her child to the Clinic, she suspect her child has got asma, the nurse told her there is nothing wrong with her child, and gave her Paracetamol without any check-up. Another lady who was at the clinc told the nurse about her baby’s symptoms- it’s like epilesie atack’s. The nurse at the clinic in Krugersdorp-west told her, it’s her child’s thorsels, and the state does not do that any more. ???? Why do we get this poor service? We don’t have medical-aid, and we don’t have the money to go to private hospital’s and private docter’s. I don’t think it’s fear.

  6. Westonaria Clinic is a sad story. We were transferred there from Soweto and mom was told she should go back to Soweto as on the file it was not shown as the referral clinic initially from Bara. Guess one would suffer whilst this public sector places think they can play around with people.

  7. ons ervaar ook probleme by die Glenharvie Kliniek – mens wag vir ure sonder om gehelp te word – my werker was 3 keer daar op een dag (gelukkig woon ons naby) baie min pasiente maar sy wag 2 ure toe loop sy om werk te gaan doen weer terug later wag weer 1 en half – indien die pasiente iets vra word hulle net geignoreer en notas in leers gemaak oor hul ‘houding’ maandag was daar pasiente baie siek vroeg oggend toe daar wel ambulans arriveer in die middag is hulle weg sonder haar – uur later het die kliniek personeel nadat sy begin naar word vir haar ‘n drip op gesit – dit is ni aanvaarbaar dat die diens (watter diens) so sleg is nie – hulle word betaal om pasiente te dien maar hoe nou??

  8. And what happens to foreign visitors (Germany)at this horror hospital…? See and kick the bucket/Die in Africa? This is no good advertising for the country! A little innuendo must be: Were the nurses black? So sorry to disturb lunch/ tee with my illness.

  9. Internationally, ‘healthcare’ is known as an unselfish ‘calling’ – committed people managing sick people, and not people managing commodities! When a calling becomes ‘just another job’, as appears to have become the case in many instances, committed workers leave the system – and those who should benefit from it (the patient in this case), suffer the consequences.

  10. There are still a couple of well managed public healthcare facilities in our country, however, these are few and far between, and thus fail to benefit South African communities as a whole. Our Constitution makes provision for good healthcare for all of our citizens, however, the implementation of this provision is indeed of diminutive value to those who most require public healthcare.
