Morgenrood on his way to title glory

An astonishing performance at Pakisa Raceway brings Ben closer to the title.

Proudly supported by the Rose Foundation, V8 Supercars raised temperatures in Welkom recently with plenty of track action.

The South African Sports and V8 Supercars had one of the biggest grids on the day and the spectators that attended the Super Series day enjoyed some exciting racing.

Ben Morgenrood of Indy Oil GUD duly placed his Mustang on pole, followed by Franco di Matteo and Terry Wilford. Mackie Adlem took up fourth place on the grid. Newcomer Andries Marx was driving Larry Wilford’s Corvette for the first time and buried his car in the sand trap on the warm up lap for race one, leading to several unplanned safety car laps before the start.

Once the race was under way, Morgenrood led from start to finish with Di Matteo in hot pursuit. Adlem was close behind in third, followed by Matty Maartens and young Jody van Zummeren.

Clare Vale unfortunately ran out of fuel in the last lap and Terry Wilford retained his reputation as the unluckiest driver in the class when he lost a wheel during the race.

The partially inverted grid for race two saw Vale on pole, with Van Zummeren and Maartens next in line. Di Matteo had no intention of losing this race and quickly cut his way through the field to take the win.

Adlem hung on to second, ahead of Morgenrood in third. Romano Sartori claimed fourth after an off-track excursion with a Shelby, followed by Terry Wilford, who finished two laps down.

Van Zummeren parked his car after spinning out and tagging Vale who then was side-lined with a puncture in what was certainly an eventful race.

The overall win on the day went to Di Matteo, with Morgenrood second and Adlem third. However, Morgenrood is still leading the pack on the leaderboard.

The next Super Series event will take place at Zwartkops Raceway on 30 August.
