Criminals target fruit and veg store

Criminals clean out store's cash office and flee with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Randfontein Police is investigating a case of business robbery well-orchestrated by an unknown number of criminals. They targeted the local Fruit and Veg City store and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash this past weekend.

Store owner Santa Reynolds believes the suspects gained entry through the roof at approximately 10pm – a day after the store had received change from major cash transportation company G4S on 31 July.

“I am not too certain as to how this happened but I suspect that these people jumped our boundary and gained entry to our premises through the roof,” Reynolds says.

“They then made their way to our cash office where the money was kept. The alarm did go off for a while and EPR security reaction officers responded but couldn’t spot anything suspicious and left immediately. From there on, the suspects managed to disconnect the alarm, grind open our safe and clean it out.

“They took every cent from the safe; it was a lot of money.”

According to her, the suspects came well prepared and had enough time to do the job.

“Those people left their grinder discs behind as well as their spanners among other things and that tells me they knew what they were doing. One of them even left behind a bottle of Heineken – there were blood stains on the floor as well.”

Reynolds explains that prior to their fleeing the scene, they damaged the surveillance cameras and took the cameras’ computer box.

It is believed that the suspects left the premises through a window at the back of the shop, which was found to be broken.

Police is investigating but despite this, it is business as usual.
