South Africa’s Roland Schoeman dropped a hint of a possible retirement from swimming after he finished sixth in the final of the men’s 50m freestyle on Tuesday.
Schoeman recorded a time of 22.36 in his final swim of the Commonwealth Games, while fellow countryman Brad Tandy finished a position below him in seventh.
The 34-year-old, who won two silver medals in this year’s games, claimed that his fondest moments in his Commonwealth career games in Glasgow 2014 and Melbourne 2006.
But after a disappointing swim, he looks ready to leave the pool: “It’s disappointing, I need to go figure things out.
“A few weeks ago I was swimming 22.0 and that would have been good enough to get me on the podium here. But, you’re only as good as your last swim, so this is it.”
