South African’s progress in Games

Sprinters progress through to the semifinals of the men’s event.

Two of Team South Africa’s 100-metre sprinters progressed through to the semifinals of the men’s event as the track events in the Commonwealth Games commenced on Sunday.

National champion Simon Magakwe as well as Akani Simbine both qualified into the semis automatically, while late addition to the team, Ncincilili Titi, didn’t make it.

Titi was first off the mark in heat five of nine and he ended fourth in 10.48, before Magakwe took off in heat seven to record a time of 10.34.

Fellow compatriot and shot-putter Orazio Cremona also progressed automatically but in his case to the finals, while South Africa’s para-athlete Juanelie Meijer ended sixth in the combined T37/38 long jump.

Cremona sailed through with some of his best statistics of three qualifying efforts, thudding home in 20.03.
