Mayor and team to clean up West Rand for Madiba

West Rand District Municipality to pay Bekkersdal and OR Tambo informal settlement a visit.

The West Rand District Municipality Executive Mayor Mpho Nawa and team will be visiting various homes and disadvantaged families to clean, paint and maintain food gardens throughout the West Rand on Mandela Day.

He calls on residents to join in when doing this.

This will be in response to the call made by the President of South Africa Jacob Zuma to embark on a clean up campaign throughout July specifically on Mandela Day celebrated on 18 July.

According to West Rand District Municipality spokesperson Dennis Mangope, Nawa will be clearing up illegal dumping sites in Bekkersdal and the OR Tambo informal settlements as well.

“In line with the mandate of doing our late Tata proud, our Mayor will be embarking on the clean up campaign and will be distributing toys at the Lesego Pre School in Khutsong and at the Ebuhleni home in Westonaria as well.

“This is because children were very close to Madiba’s heart and we want to keep that aspect in mind when celebrating the man’s life,” says Mangope.

He adds that during this time, the mayor and local councilors within the West Rand District Municipality will be dedicating more than 67 minutes to honour the late Madiba

and will be taking to other areas within the West Rand namely Randfontein, Mogale City, Westonaria and Merafong to keep South Africa clean.
