Randfontein host to Gauteng Women’s Soccer tourney

Women soccer players from all over Gauteng flock to the Greenhills Sport Stadium.

The Greenhills Sport Stadium recently became the home of soccer as the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation hosted its third annual Gauteng Women’s Soccer Tournament.

According to media spokesperson for the department Nomazwe Ntlokwana, the tournament is an initiative of the Gauteng Provincial Government, hosted in partnership with the South African Football Association (Safa).

“The tournament is aimed at bringing much-needed recognition to women playing football and increase participation of women in the sport. This is why we are hosting these football festivals in all the Safa regions of Gauteng,” Ntlokwana says.

The tournament consists of five regional mini-tournaments on the West Rand. Games feature U/13, U/15 and senior teams selected from various local football associations.

“The regional games will culminate in the provincial finals that will take place as part of the Women’s Month activities on 22 and 23 August,” Ntlokwana continues.

She adds that the opening of the tournament was a great success and they are excited to see what the rest of the tournament holds.
