Deserted building causes headaches

Rubbish and mice are said to be all over the premises.

A building at the corner of Naartjie and Palm Streets in Greenhills that is believed to be deserted has become a nuisance for residents.

This was evident when the herald investigated numerous complaints.

This unfinished building now has become a home to vagrants and poses a health and safety hazard to many. The herald caught up with Konrad Pawlowicz, landlord of the apartments right next to the dilapidated building, to find out how he has been affected by it.

According to him, the vacant building is a pain the neck for him and his tenants alike.

“I cannot tell you how frustrated I am with this building because it’s an eyesore. Seemingly no one wants to take ownership of it,” Pawlowicz says.

“Some construction company wanted to build apartments and went bankrupt in the process. I have approached the municipality to find out what is really going on and they also don’t know. Now we are forced to sit with this mess, which just makes life difficult for some of us,” Pawlowicz continues.

He adds that the municipality was asked to trace the previous owner of the building, however that was never done.

The herald sought comment from the Randfonten Local Municipality head of communications Phillip Montshiwa but he was not available.
