Library celebrates youth month

Westonaria Library celebrates youth month by hosting a poetry competition for the youth of Randfontein and Westonaria.

Westonaria Library celebrates youth month by hosting a poetry competition for the youth in and around Westonaria.

According to Programmes Librarian Righardt le Roux, the Westonaria Library Coffee Club hosted this competition on 7 June.

“The youth of Westonaria, Bekkersdal, Mohlakeng, Randfontein and various other surrounding communities entered into this competition,” says Le Roux.

He explains that each participant was given a picture and had to write a poem describing the picture.

“However, it was the Grade 10 pupil from Westonaria High School, Gwyneth Nomvuyo Lokwe, who described the picture best with her striking piece – When I was a little girl,” says Le Roux.

Gwyneth also received a cash prize of R400 sponsored by the Women’s Agricultural Union.

“Some of Gwyneth’s other poetry is also available in the youth anthology ‘WOW’.

This publication published by Lecanto Press was made possible by a grant from the Gauteng Department of Sport, Recreation and Art,” Le Roux adds.

On reflecting on the entries established local poet and author Lina Vogel, said that this poem captured the essence of the photograph without becoming pretentious.

“It is spot-on writing, reflecting the sensitivity of the poet,” says Vogel.

“We thank each and every person who helped us during this event.

“Your sponsorships, interest and support means a lot to us,” says Le Roux.
