Theft of manhole covers still rife in Randfontein

This is a safety risk for all road users in Randfontein and is a set back for the municicipality.

The theft of manhole covers is said to be on the increase in Randfontein .

This was revealed by the Randfontein Local Municipality’s head of communications Phillip Montshiwa who says that affected areas include Kenneth Road, Feddler Street, the R28 and Duncan Street.

“We have come to realize that the theft of manhole covers is still on the increase in Randfontein and that is a huge problem

“People tend to steal the manhole covers throughout town and sell them to recycling centres in order to make a quick buck.

“Not only does this create a safety risk for road users of this town, it also sets us back as the municipality,” says Montshiwa.

He urges all residents to report any activities of this nature.

“We need residents to be our eyes and ears when it comes to fighting this scourge.

He adds that so far, the municipality has replaced approximately 400 stolen manhole covers with concrete manhole covers throughout Randfontein.

People who wish to report the theft of manhole covers can contact the Department of Roads and Infrastructure in Randfontein on 011 411-0000.

People are also urged to report businesses that buy manhole covers.
