Mayor’s plans for Randfontein

The municipality will spend over R1 billion in Randfontein and its surroundings alone.

Randfontein executive Mayor Sylvia Thebenare has announced that over R1 billion has been set aside to address issues of service delivery or the lack thereof in Randfontein for the 2014/2015 financial year.

This was at a budget speech on Friday where the mayor tabled the town’s finances.

She also announced that despite operating at a deficit of more than R50 million, she has great plans for Randfonetin going forward.

In line with this, the municipality will be addressing the provision of infrastructure in Randfontein as well as local economic development and the building of integrated human settlements among other things.

According to her, these are some of the things highlighted by residents during her public consultation road show in the different communities throughout Randfontein.

“We have been to Toekomsrus and our people raised a number of issues ranging from street lights, housing, crime, title deeds and youth development.

‘In Mohlakeng, our people need jobs and are facing problems with regards to the condition of the roads, cable theft and illegal dumping.

“These are some of the challenges faced by the people of Randfontein overall and I am proud to announce that we will be looking into them,” says Thebenare.

She adds that to address this, a whopping 8.5 million has been set aside for the construction of roads and storm water drainage systems in Mohlakeng.

Meanwhile, Mohlakeng Stadium will see refurbishments to the tune of R1 million while R10 million will be allocated for the Toekomsrus Sports Complex.

Another R500 000 will be spent on the maintenance of parks throughout town.

According to Thebenare, these are some of the focal points in the budget that will see residents benefit from elements of service delivery.

“All these are genuine demands and on behalf of this government, we have committed ourselves to addressing these issues as a matter of priority.

“Owing to this, we commit ourselves to monitor the progress of service delivery in all aspects,” says Thebenare.
