Update 25 April: An alleged rapist who was chased and beaten by residents of Mohlakeng has died.
The man succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the attack.
The man was alleged to have been part of a criminal gang operating in the area.
25 April: A local man is lucky to be alive after he was attacked, stoned and hit with knob kierries by an angry mob in Mohlakeng on 24 April.
According to information received, the man is apparently part of a dangerous gang that terrorizes the local community.
The gang is suspected of numerous robberies and rapes that have taken place in Mohlakeng.
Residents of the area decided that enough is enough and set out to corner members of the gang themselves.
When they caught up with the suspect, they chased him through the streets of Extension 11 in Mohlakeng.
During the attack, local woman identified the man as the suspect in her rape case.
The herald spoke to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst who confirmed the incident and says that upon their arrival at the scene, the man had already been beaten to a pulp.
“He had to be removed from the scene for his own safety and was then taken to a nearby hospital where he is currently recovering.
“Owing to the nature of the complaints and the ongoing investigation into the allegations against him, the man has been placed under police guard at the hospital,” says Ernst
She adds that the complainant who was apparently raped by the man was also taken to the police station where the case was reported.
No arrests have been made with regards to the mob justice incident, however, the police say they are investigating the brutal attack.
