Residents fix potholes themselves

Fed-up residents take to the streets to repair potholes themselves.

Residents of Randfontein are fed up with the Randfontein Local Municipality’s less than effective efforts of repairing potholes throughout Randfontein and have opted to take matters into their own hands and fix potholes themselves using cement.

This was done on 8 March on the R559 near Finsbury, where a group of more than ten people were spotted fixing potholes with their own resources.

This is according to Helikon Park resident and passer-by Heidi Loots, who says that it was a team effort where female residents were seen directing traffic while the men were hard at work repairing potholes with cement.

“People are fed up with the local municipality and its failure to fix the potholes on our roads.

“These potholes are everywhere and they are damaging our cars.

“We cannot continue repairing and replacing tyres all the time while we pay rates and taxes as well .

“As it stands, I drive a 4×4 vehicle and I can hardly drive on these roads here in Randfontein,” says Loots.

She adds that the municipality needs to reconsider their strategy when it comes to potholes.

The Herald has contacted the Randfontein Local Municipality spokesperson Lucky Chiya who says that they are aware of the crisis with the potholes and are working toward finding a permanent solution.

“We are aware of the crisis with the potholes and people need to know that we are working on them and we need them to exercise patience in that regard.

“We don not encourage people to fix potholes themselves no matter how bad they might be.

“Instead, we urge people to report them continuously,” says Chiya.

  1. Alhoewel ek hulle pogings opreg waardeer, lyk die pad alweer net so erg soos voorheen. Dis n nagmerrie om soggens en saans daar deur te moet ry.

  2. Personally I applaud the residents of sector 5(3)who have taken time out of their weekend to help do some repairs to the roads. I too believe that due to the fact that we pay rates and taxes it is the duty of our municipality to make repairs to roads in a more durable manner, as any half hearted repairs are only washed out with the rain. Complaining for the last how many years has to date not delivered any change to the state of our roads. We cannot as a community keep on taking the loss of damage to our vehicles as management refuses to listen to the needs of the people.

  4. Hi, with regards to the the potholes in our town, I have a solution. Lets pay our taxes every month into a seperate account and only hand the funds over to the municipality once the roads are repaired to a satisfactory standard.

  5. The local municipality must wake up. I live in westonaria and every time I must go threw randfontein I must ride like somebody that has been drinking. I am fed up with them and I am a person not living in randfontein. People in randfondtein contact the road assistent in krugersdorp. Mr basi. He wil help to claim against the municipality. Maybe when they see they have to damages to cars. Maybe they will wake up. That is what I did. Thank you. Fiona.

  9. It is actually a crying shame that the government of the day can still go around and make empty promises to the electoral. If they are beaten to repair potholes imagine what is in store for us if they are put into power again. The potholes will become sinkholes.

  10. Please note that filling the holes with cement is not the answer and also expensive.

If you want to fill a hole, buy a 25 kg bag of Cold Asphalt from Jacks Paint in Randfontein which can be used directly from the pack.

  11. excersize patience? That’s easy to say if you are not the one that incurs damages. I take my hat of to Krugersdorp municipality, the minute the continuous rain stopped they started repairing the roads. But then I heard there’s no funds available to pay for repairs.
