Department takes action against drinking traffic officer

The officer was caught on camera drinking while on duty at a local pub in Greenhills on Valentines Day (14 February).

Investigations into the case of the Randfontein Traffic Ofiicer that was caught red-handed drinking alcohol while on duty are currently underway.

This was revealed today (25 February) by Randfontein Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo who says that the department will not tolerate this kind of behaviour and says that the details around the incident will be looked into.

This comes after the Herald published an article on 28 Feb where the traffic officer was caught drinking beer with a friend on Valentiness Day (14 February) at a local pub in Greenhills just after 1pm.

According to information received from a reliable source, the officer did not seem to mind the eyes of the public and only cared about enjoying himself.

“All I can say at this point is that, from the number plates on the officer’s vehicle as well as the day in which the incident occurred, we were able to positively identify the officer and we will deal with the matter according to our internal procedures,” says Randfontein Traffic Chief Kenny Mampondo.

“An investigation is currently underway and hopefully the matter will be resolved soon.

“This is a law enforcement agency and we fight lawlessness in the public and we must also fight it among ourselves if it exists.

He adds that it cannot be correct that traffic officers drink while on duty because they are meant to behave themselves within the workplace and out of the workplace as well.

“There are processes that will have to be followed and I have already ordered a superintent to start with the investigations.”
