Police recover illicit cigarettes worth approximately R2 million

This was at a farm in Randfontein and comes after a tip-off.

The Randfontein SAPS together with the Krugersdorp drug task team swooped down on a farm in Randfontein and discovered illicit cigarettes worth approximately R2 million.

This was on 29 January after a tip-off led to the successful bust.

According to Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst, officers received information about the farm in question and decided to investigate.

“Upon arrival, police officers found a large truck and a trailer loaded with what seemed like crushed glass.

“We believe that this was to disguise what was in the truck,” says Ernst.

She adds that police officers continued with their search throughout the night and later discovered the cigarettes.

“A 32-year-old man has since been arrested following the incident and was charged with being in the of illicit cigarettes.

“SARS and Customs also formed part of the team and are investigating the possession and illegal importing of cigarettes,” says Ernst.
