The truck was carrying cigarettes worth a substantial amount of money and the police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

A cigarette truck carrying cigarettes worth a substantial amount of money has been hijacked on Village Street on 13 January.

This was revealed by Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst who says that the police have launched a massive manhunt for the suspects following the hijacking incident.

“Information received indicates that the driver of the truck was attacked and overpowered by two heavily armed men in Village Street while offloading merchandise at a wholesale shop.

“They forced him into the vehicle, kept his face down and drove off with him,” says Ernst.

She adds that the suspects made their way to Toekomsrus where they offloaded the cigarettes, however, the exact location of the drop-off remains unknown.

They later ditched the driver and the vehicle on Moloporivier Street in the area.

“Fortunately no shots were fired and the man was not injured during the entire ordeal.

“Investigating officer Warrant Officer Bongani Mpete is currently investigating the case and anyone who might have witnessed anything can contact him on 011 278 8100.”
