Local matrics shine

Schools across the greater Randfontein and Westonaria areas boasts with fantastic matric pass rates despite a very difficult year.

Schools in both Randfontein and Westonaria have come out on top in the 2013 matric exams with the vast majority of schools showing matric pass rates in excess of 80 percent.

The top performing school in the region is, for the sixth year running, Randfontein High School with a 100 percent pass rate.

The school has also been named the top performing school on the West Rand as well as among the top 12 performing schools in the Gauteng province.

The other local town schools namely Hoërskool Riebeeckrand, Hoërskool Jan Viljoen and Westonaria High School, all achieved fantastic success with matric pass rates upwards of 98 percent.

Township schools and rural schools in the greater Randfontein and Westonaria had a pleasant surprise in store for everyone, achieving fantastic results despite tumultuous times in local townships toward the end of 2013.

Mohlakeng’s AB Phokompe Secondary School leads the pack with a fantastic 92.44 percent matric pass rate, followed closely by Baderile Secondary School with 91.07 percent.

Bekkersdal schools, although not quite on par with most other schools in the region, did very well considering the violent protests in the region which disrupted much of the school year.

Simunye Secondary boasts with a 72.17 matric pass rate, while Ithuteng Secondary did slightly better with 77.46 percent.

Other township schools are Kgothalang Secondary (78.69 percent), Thuto Lehakwe Secondary (85.82 percent), Pahama Secondary (84.86 percent), and TM Lethlake Secondary (84.38 percent).

Randfontein Secondary School in Toekomsrus also did very well with a commendable 80 percent matric pass rate.
