Hand grenade thrown into child’s bedroom

I grabbed all my children and went outside the house.

A Toekomsrus woman her and three children aged 3, 13, and 7 weeks are lucky to be alive after a hand grenade was thrown into their house on 18 December.

According to Florence Adams, the incident occurred at approximately 10.30 while she and her family were watching TV.

“I heard the bedroom window break and my first thought was that one of the children was sleeping in the bedroom at the time.

“We rushed to the bedroom and could barely believe our eyes when we saw the hand grenade lying on the bed.

“I had thought it was probably a ball thrown by a neighbourhood child.”

Upon realising the danger, Adams grabbed the children and fled out of the house.

“We contacted the police and upon their arrival, the Roodepoort Bomb Squad removed the grenade and detonated it in a controlled explosion in a nearby veld.

“I am totally shocked that someone would do such a thing.

“My children and I could have been seriously injured or even killed had the grenade exploded.”

“I cannot see why anyone would want to throw a hand grenade through a child’s bedroom window.

“It makes no sense,” says Adams.

She adds that she hopes that the police can arrest whoever is responsible.

Meanwhile, Randfontein SAPS spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst has confirmed the incident and expressed relief that no-one was injured.

“The police together with the Roodepoort bomb squad are currently investigating the case.

“We are happy that the bomb squad was able to safely dispose of the grenade.”
