Bridge collapses on R28

The R28 between Krugersdorp and Randfontein has been closed in both directions.

Update 5 November: The Herald has received new information regardng thecable bridge on the R28 between Krugersdorp and Randfontein that has collapsed.

According toa source, the bridge belongs to local mine Mogale Mintails, the same company responsible for damage caused to the Robinson Bridge some years ago after a truck carrying an abnormal load crossed the bridge.

The bridge has still not been properly repaired.

According to our source, the collapse of the cable bridge was caused by a ruptured pipe, which spilt silt that that transported through the pipe, accross the bridge.

The resulting silt spill on top of the bridge allegedly became too heavy for the bridge to hold it, leading to the bridge collapsing either last night or in the early hours of this morning.

Traffic was brought to a near complete standstill on the R28 as a result of the collapse.

The Herald is yet to speak to a representative from Mogale Mintails regarding this incident.

5 November: The cable bridge near West Village on the R28 between Kugersdorp and Randfontein has collapsed resulting in the R28 being closed in both directions.

By 3am this morning workers were working frantically to repair the cable bridge, which allegedly had become unstable due to the heavy rain recently, before the morning rush hour.

A worker on the scene told the Herald that he doubted that this could be done.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to get to or from Krugersdorp.

The Herald would advise motorists to make use of the Tom Muller Street turn off from the R28 in order to get to Krugersdorp.

Tom Muller Street turns left off the R28 just after West Village and runs all the way to Luipaard Street in Krugersdorp West from where Ontdekkers Road, the N14, as well as Robert Broom Drive is easily accessible.
